Borneo
The island of Borneo, located in Southeast Asia, is the third largest island in the world. It inhabits approximately 16 million people, shared by three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam.
Up until a few decades ago, Borneo landscape was covered by dense rainforest, rugged terrain, rough rivers and has developed a legendary reputation of having head-hunters as its inhabitants. With these features, Borneo has been considered one if the most mysterious and exotic places on Earth. Many people live on the island in harmony with nature and follow semi monadic or nomadic lifestyles.
Three thousand years ago traders from other lands began to use Borneo as a trading post, including China and India. About five hundred years Ago Islam was introduced and a number of Muslim Kingdoms were established – the largest Brunei. Borneo is in fact a name derived from Brunei.
Today, although Borneo is rapidly modernizing, the thousands of indigenous ethnic communities still thrive, bringing the best of old and new together. Headhunting, however, is not one of those thriving communities and has become a thing of legend.
