Aboriginal

Aboriginal Culture is made up of many traditions. The First Tradition would be First Nations Culture which consists of many different languages: Nakota Sioux, Blackfoot, Cree, Anishnabe, Dene, Ojibway, Sodo and the 2nd is Meti Culture where they speak English, French, Michif and Cree. The 3rd is Inuit Heritage’s native tongue Eskimo-Aleut. The Aboriginal Heritage is spread across Canada into Tribes. Treaty 6 is made up of 18 tribes spread across central Alberta. Treaty 7 has 7 Tribes that are spread across southern Alberta and Treaty 8 consists of 24 Tribes spread across northern Alberta. Altogether there are 48 different Tribes in Alberta. Aboriginal People are the keepers to Mother Earth and will protect her for as long as we can. We will continue to nourish her and feed her when she needs it. Our people have survived and lived off the land for many years. Some of our Traditions include: Pow-wow’s, Roundances, Tea dances, Jigging and Throat Singing. A way that brings us back to the Earth is our ceremonies. The Canadian Native Friendship Centre is very proud to host the Aboriginal Pavilion this year. We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary at this years’ Servus Heritage Festival. The Canadian Native Friendship Centre has been part of the Edmonton Community since 1962.
