Canadian

The word “Canada” is derived from “Kanata”, which means village or settlement in Iroquois. Suggestions such as New Britain, Brittania, Cabotia and Ursalia were popular but the Dominion of Canada was finally chosen, and it was created on July 1, 1867. Alberta didn’t become a province of Canada until September 1, 1905. Canada today is the second largest country in the world with 33 million inhabitants and almost 10 million square kilometres of land. It has the world’s largest coastline, and an immensely diverse landscape including mountain ranges, plains, forests, and tundra. Welcoming approximately 200,000 immigrants a year, Canada is a multicultural nation that values diversity and equality. In 1988 we became the first in the world to create a Multiculturalism act to ensure that all Canadians are equal, no matter what their heritage. Come visit the Canadian Pavilion and find out more about the country that we all call home!
