Serbia

Dobro Dosli! Welcome to the Serbian Pavilion! Serbs have lived in the Balkans since the 6th century, at the gateway between Eastern and Western civilizations. Carriers of a proud tradition of statehood and of an attachment to freedom, Serbs have accomplished many cultural, artistic, and scientific achievements. In Edmonton, Serbs contribute as skilled workers, artisans, engineers, entrepreneurs, writers, and university professors. Serbs immigrated to Canada in the 1850s and to Alberta starting in 1907 and 1908. Serb families arrived in Edmonton between the wars and after the Second World War in small waves corresponding to difficult events occurring in their home country. Since the break-up of Yugoslavia, this number has been increasing. There is now an estimated 4,000 Serbs in Edmonton. The community has built the Saint Sava Serbian Orthodox Church and Parish Hall, organized a church-school community, and preserved Serbian culture through dance groups, soccer teams, a weekly radio program, Serbian language school, and the Serbian library.
