Irish
Welcome to the Irish Pavilion!
Today, over 450,000 Albertans can trace their ancestry back to Ireland. Substantial Irish immigration to Alberta did not begin until the 1880’s; however, most arrived between the turn of the century and World War I. During the past 100 years, the Irish have played significant roles in commerce, politics, farming, and industry. Approximately 20 percent of the early fur traders in Alberta were Irish. The Irish contribution to Alberta culture includes Irish cuisine, dance, music, and Gaelic football. We have been regular participants in the Servus Heritage Festival since it’s inception in 1976 as one of the original 11 presenting cultures. As Irish dance and music are the most visible characteristics of the Irish culture, they will be well demonstrated at this year’s festival. Predominantly, all Irish cultural events and activities fall under the umbrella of the Irish Sports and Social Society. Drop by our pavilion, watch the dancers, listen to the music, and enjoy the food!
