Ethiopia
Selam le-hulachehum! (Peace to all of you!)
Ethiopia is a nation with remarkable cultural, political and historical achievements: the only African country to successfully resist colonization; one of the four great civilizations of the ancient world; the seat of the Ark of the Covenant; the source of the Blue Nile and the ancient home of various religions. Ethiopian community’s participations in Heritage Festival have been riveting in many respects. Our stage acts have captured audiences’ imaginations; the art displays have exhilarated minds, serving both as a tunnel into our rich past and a lens into a bright future; and the famous Ethiopian cuisine have proved to be orgiastic feast for the taste buds.
This year a central feature of our community association’s activities is celebration of volunteerism. Since its founding in 1982 Ethiopian-Canadian Community Association of Edmonton has been an admirable example of volunteerism. Virtually all of the association’s achievements have been realized on the backs of those who have served with diligence and creativity. Volunteers have planned and organized cultural events; they have raised funds to address the plight of those in need here in Edmonton and in Ethiopia and have created and ran programs that help define, enrich and celebrate Ethio-Canadian identity. In these and so many other endeavors, so many have for so long said ‘I am available to serve’ and transformed their words into action.
We will continue to exemplify the spirit of Heritage Festival by showcasing the diversity of experiences that constitute the Ethiopian identity as we celebrate volunteerism.
Join us for a virtual experience of Ethiopia.
