German
German Canadians, the third largest ethnic group in Canada are closely entwined with our Alberta Heritage. The first Germans settled in Canada in 1664 near Quebec City and the mid 18th century, settled in Nova Scotia and became famous as hardy fishermen and skilled ship builders, gaining renown for building the world famous “bluenose” schooners. The first Germans to arrive in what is now Alberta settled in Calgary and Pincher Creek in 1882. Some German settlers came in groups and settled whole areas, such as around Bruderheim.
The German-Canadian Association of Alberta was incorporated in 1967 when a number of organizations speaking the German Language joined together to further enhance the German culture throughout the Province. Pride in German heritage is evident through the many contributions the Association through its member Clubs, Choirs and Groups has made to the community.
It also supports funding for German speaking organizations, accredited German language courses, and continues to promote the German culture and its contribution to the public life of the province.
