Fiji
The Dutch and the British explored Fiji in the 17th and 18th centuries. During 1874, the Fijian chiefs ceded their land to the British Crown. Soon afterwards, a large cultivation of sugar cane began. More than 60,000 indentured labourers from India came to work on these plantations. Fiji became independent on October 10th, 1970. The Paradise of the South Pacific consisting of over 700 islands with beautiful beaches, wavering palm trees, crystal blue lagoons encompass the magic serenity of a place you do not want to leave in a hurry. Fiji is a multi-ethnic society with three official languages of Fijian, Hindustani and English. Indo-Fijians began migrating to Canada in late 1960’s. They brought along the rich island cultures, languages, customs, music, and religions. Although they came from small islands, they have brought along their big hearts.
